Abstract:

Exhibition-sized copy photographs of San Francisco and Oakland views, including street scenes, churches, commercial buildings, theaters, hotels, Chinatown, residences, and the earthquake and fire of 1906. These views were produced as a set of exhibition prints of uniform size, copied from originals in various collections by Wyland Stanley, as an employee of the San Francisco Chronicle. A set of 300 of these or similar exhibition prints was displayed at the Palace of the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, sponsored by the Chronicle. Titled "San Francisco from 1850 to 1906," the exhibit was part of the larger "Exhibition Celebrating the State Centennial." Original photographs and prints were copied from various institutions and public collections, and enlarged and re-touched copies were printed by Wyland Stanley. Source collections include the California State Library, the San Francisco Public Library, the Bancroft Library, the California Historical Society, the Society of California Pioneers, Wells Fargo's History Room, the de Young Museum, and collectors including F.P. Farquhar, Edwin Grabhorn, George Pope, Jr., and Roger D. Lapham. (See San Francisco Chronicle, Sept. 5, 1950, pg 3 and Sept. 10, 1950, pg 90.)
